The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
