TikTok Provides Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Content in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to reduce the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, spurred by new video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that almost 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

Our research shows that numerous viewers like content produced via AI tools, including digital art to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The platform announced that there are currently over a billion videos on its app identified as made with AI. Overall, more than 100 mn videos are submitted to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they watch by opening the “manage topic” setting in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be modified under the tool include news, style, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines mandate users to label lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will now add an AI-generated tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is additionally launching a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and institutions to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support educational bodies specializing in educating computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its safety measures, during controversy over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in Britain. TikTok is set to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by humans. The platform stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of unsafe media as swiftly, which is why a extensive automated help is proving valuable process content quickly.”
