Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
